Do you offer ChronoTrack timing?
The state of the art ChronoTrack systems will be used to record participants’ times at the start, on the course and at the finish. True race times will be recorded from start line to finish line.

The ChronoTrack system uses a disposable tag that allows you to walk away after the finish without the need to have your tag collected.

Visit www.chronotrack.com for more information. The ChronoTrack Timing tag is located on the bib number and is labeled with a number that matches the bib number.

Follow the instructions in your registration packet to place the tag securely on your shoe. At the expo when you pick up your bib number, please check that your bib has your correct name, sex, age and ChronoTrack Timing tag number.

Proceed to the solutions table if any of the information is incorrect. ChampionChip Timing will NOT be used for Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio. Your ChampionChip timing chips will not record your time.

What do I do if I have my own ChampionChip?
ChampionChip Timing will NOT be used for Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego. Your ChampionChip timing chips will not record your time.

How can I purchase additional concert tickets?
New in 2009, the headliner concert is FREE to participants, spectators and the general public.

Where will the headliner concert take place?
The headliner concert will now take place in the Finish Line Village at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, immediately following the race. The schedule (subject to change) is as follows:

  • 10:30 - 12:30 Opening band
  • 12:30 Awards
  • 1:30 Headliner Act
  • 3:30 Concert finale

 

What are the entry fees for the 2009 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon San Diego?

  • $95 (thru 1/31/09)
  • $110 (2/1 - 4/17)
  • $120 (4/18 - 5/24)
  • $135 at Health & Fitness Expo (May 29-30)
  • Mail/fax entries not accepted after May 24, 2009

Gear Bag Drop Off: Free From UPS
All participants may check their gear at the start at the Runner's Gear Check Area, provided by UPS, located at the Start Area. UPS will transport the Gear Bags from the Start to the Finish while you are running. Your gear bag will be waiting for you at the Finish Line.

Military Divisions
As of 2004, we have added a new military division for men and women at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. This division will allow you to compete against other official military participants in your gender. Awards will apply to the top three male and female finishers. You will be able to compete in both the age group division and the military division.

What is the minimum age to participate in the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon?
You must be at least 18 years of age on race day in order to participate in the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon.

What is the official charity of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon?
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training is the official charity of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. To date, nearly $134 million (net) has been raised by Team In Training at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon San Diego. For more information on this charity, please visit www.teamintraining.org

Where can I park?
Participants are encouraged to park in the "official" parking area in the Airport Authority parking lot near the Finish Line and take advantage of our shuttle service. Please click here for more info!

Shuttle Service to the Start:
Start shuttles run from 4 am - 6 am and are for participants only. Carpool and Arrive Early! Click here for detailed information.

  • Some hotels offer race day shuttle service to and from the start and finish lines.
  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training has a different shuttle plan. Please consult your local chapter.
  • *Please remove your car from the parking area by 5 pm on race day. Cars parked overnight will be towed.

Does the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon have a Pasta Party?
No, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon does not have a pasta party. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training will hold their own pasta party for their participants.

How do I change my predicted finishing time once I am registered?
If your predicted finishing time has changed since the time you registered and you would like to start in a different corral, please visit the Corral Change booth located in the packet pick-up area of the Health & Fitness Expo. You can only change to a faster predicted finish time (i.e. a corral closer to the start).

What do I do if my race results are incorrect or missing?
Click here to submit a results correction request Corrections will be updated on a weekly basis.

Travel/Hotel Accommodations
Avis is the official car rental company of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. For additional information, including discounts and a list of local hotels, please click here.

What flavor of Cytomax will be used on the course?
Cytomax, the new official Sport Drink, will be available at ten aid stations along the course. Citrus will be the flavor served along the course.

Will bikes, skates, or baby joggers be allowed on the course?
Sorry, no dogs, in-line skates, baby joggers, skateboards, or bikes will be allowed on any part of the course. This is for everyone's safety!

Is the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon walker friendly?
Yes, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is a "walker friendly" event, provided all participants complete the course within the 7-hour course time limit. (see course cut-off information below)

Course Info - Is the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon a Boston Marathon qualifying course?
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is a certified course and a "qualifier" for the Boston Marathon.

Is there a course time limit?
Yes, participants must complete the marathon course within 7 hours.

Do you have any shorter distance races the same weekend?
No, we do not offer any shorter distances during the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon event.

Finish Location
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon will finish in a secured area at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in Point Loma. Participants will receive a finisher's medal. The Finish Line Festival features live music, refreshments and food, and one well-deserved complimentary beer. The Family Reunion area will be located on the grass area within the Finish Line Festival. Look for tall alphabet signs (A-Z) to help you locate your friends and family. Please plan to meet your family in this area. It is advisable to discuss a reunion plan with your friends and family prior to the race.

Spectators should arrive by 10 am to park at the Airport Authority parking lot near the finish line at the Marine Corp Recruit Depot. Please plan ample time to park, clear security, and take a shuttle ride to the finish line. The wait at the security checkpoint could be up to 45 minutes.

Rules Enforced on MCRD:

  • No vehicles, including bicycles, will be allowed to enter the base.
  • All persons entering the MCRD are subject to search and seizure of illegal substances.
  • Arrive early and expect at least a half hour delay when entering the MCRD.
  • Weapons of any type, alcohol, glass bottles and illegal drugs or paraphernalia are strictly prohibited on base.
  • All bags, packs, camera bags and personal property will be searched.
    Guests are encouraged to limit baggage brought into the MCRD. This will facilitate expeditious entry.
  • No dogs or pets will be allowed to enter the MCRD.
  • While within the MCRD, please stay within the clearly marked designated area.
  • Entry into the MCRD constitutes consent to search of personnel and the property under their control, pursuant to internal security act of 1950, section 21, 50 u.s.c. 797 (1979).
  • The MCRD is an active military base. Due to national security concerns, any jokes or references will be treated seriously and will result in eviction from the base and possible arrest. Please respect the MCRD officials and grounds.

Corral Changes
As of May 1, 2009 bib/race numbers and corrals have been assigned. We are unable to make any more corral changes until race weekend. You will be able to change your corral at the Health & Fitness Expo on May 29-30. Simply pick up your bib/race number and head over to the Corral Change tables. Corral changes are only necessary if you are planning on moving up to a faster corral. If you plan on going back to a slower corral, simply, start at the appropriate corral on race morning. Please let us know if you have any other questions/concerns.

Does the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon offer a Half Marathon?
There will be no half marathon finish line at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. Participants cannot register for a half marathon and all participants are encouraged to train to complete the 26.2 mile marathon in 7 hours. However, we do produce the following half marathon events:

Southwest Airlines Pace Team
Southwest Airlines and The San Diego Track Club will provide the “official” Pace Teams for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon! They are looking forward to helping runners of all abilities achieve their Marathon goals!

Where will the port-a-potties be located?
There will be port-a-potties located approximately every 1-2 miles throughout the course as well as at the start and finish line areas.

Rock 'n' Roll Marathon start times and location:
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon will start at Palm and 6th Avenue on the west end of Balboa Park.

  • Wheelchair start: 6:25 am
  • Race Start: 6:30 am

Please plan to arrive at least one hour before race start time. At the starting area you will find water, medical, gear check and portable toilets.

What if I did not receive a confirmation card?
Please bring a photo I.D. and proof of payment (cancelled check or credit card statement) to the Health & Fitness Expo. We will have blank confirmation cards available for you to complete. Confirmation cards are mandatory in order to claim your bib number and timing chip.

How do I register for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon?

Can someone else pick up my bib number and race packet?
Unfortunately, all participants must pick up their own race packet. Photo I.D. is required. Race packets will not be mailed.

What do I do if I cannot participate once I have registered?
All entries are non-refundable and non-transferable. Once we receive and accept your entry, you will not receive a refund. If you cannot participate, you may not give or sell your number to anyone else and entry fees will not be transferred from year to year. We will be happy to ship you a T-shirt from the race you registered for. Please email a request with your cancellation and include your name, street address, sex, age, phone number and T-shirt size to rnrm@eliteracing.com. T-shirts will be mailed out after the event.

I’ve already registered for the marathon. May I switch to the relay?
No. As a policy, all entries are non-refundable and non-transferable.  If you have registered for the marathon and now want to run the relay, you will have to register for the relay separately.  You will not receive a refund for the marathon. Similarly, you may not switch from the relay to the marathon.

How do I know if I am registered?
Please allow 4-5 weeks for your registration to complete the processing cycle. Your cancelled check or credit card statement will be confirmation until you receive your Final Information by mail. You may also log back in to check your registration status; see our Registration Page for details.
Please Note: Final race confirmation/information will be mailed approximately one month prior to race day. You can also download final instructions from the website; see the homepage for links.

Registration Information - What do I receive when I register?
Each registered participant and finisher will receive the following:

  • Marathon entry
  • Race number, disposable timing chip, T-shirt and goodie bag to be picked up at the Health & Fitness Expo
  • Water, Cytomax & PowerBar Gel along the course
  • Refreshments and water at the start and finish lines
  • Entertainment stages with live music and cheerleaders from start to finish
  • Finisher's medal when you cross the finish line
  • One free beer at the finish line festival
  • Entry into headliner concert with your race number
  • Finisher's certificate sent to you post race
  • Last but not least, a rockin' experience miles beyond ordinary!

What is the deadline for mail-in entries?
Mail-in entries must be mailed and postmarked by May 19 in order to ensure receipt by May 25.

How does my team get to their designated leg before race starts?
SUGGESTED TRANSPORTATION PLAN: Teams are encouraged to carpool together to the Airport Authority Lot between 4am – 6am. From there,

  • Participants running leg #1 will then take the free shuttle to the start line along with the marathoners.
  • Participants running leg #2 will take the Trolley* from the Washington Street Station (a two block walk from the parking lot) to the Santa Fe Depot Station and walk one block south to their designated Relay Transition Zone at Broadway and Kettner St.
  • Participants running leg #3 will take the Trolley* from the Washington Street Station (a two block walk from parking lot) to the Morena/Linda Vista Station and walk one block northeast to their designated Relay Transition Zone at Linda Vista Road and Napa Street.
  • Participants running leg #4 will take the free shuttle from the Airport Authority Lot to their designated Relay Transition Zone at South Shore Park parking lot off of Sea World Drive.

*Participants running legs #1, #2 and #3 may request one free All-Day Trolley Pass when they pick up their race bib number and goodie bag at the Expo. We highly suggest you affix this pass to your body (possibly on your race bib number) so it is with you at all times on Race Day. How do the 1st, 2nd and 3rd leg runners get to the finish line?
SUGGESTED TRANSPORTATION PLAN:

  • Participants running leg #1 will walk from their Relay Transition Zone to the Santa Fe Depot Trolley* Station (one block north) and take it to the Washington Street Station. They will then walk (or take the free shuttle from the Airport Authority parking lot) to the Finish Line at MCRD.
  • Participants running leg #2 will walk from their Relay Transition Zone to the Morena/Linda Vista Trolley* Station (one block southwest) and take it to the Washington Street Station. They will then walk (or take the free shuttle from the Airport Authority parking lot) to the Finish Line at MCRD.
  • Participants running leg #3 will take the free shuttle from the South Shore Park parking lot back to the Airport Authority Lot near the Finish Line. Shuttles will run between the South Shore Parking lot and the Airport Authority Lot between 9:00am and 2:00pm (expect traffic delays). They will then walk to the Finish Line at MCRD.

*Participants running legs #1, #2 and #3 may request one free All-Day Trolley Pass when they pick up their race bib number and goodie bag at the Expo. We highly suggest you affix this pass to your body (possibly on your race bib number) so it is with you at all times on Race Day. Can runners run more than their assigned leg?
No.

Are they going to receive a separate finisher’s medal than the marathoners?
Yes

Where and when will they receive their finisher’s medal?
At their designated Relay Transition Zone once they finish their leg of the relay.

Will running the relay qualify them for a Heavy Medal?
No

Will relay participants receive a finisher’s certificate?
No.

When and where will the Health & Fitness Expo be held?
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Health & Fitness Expo will be held Friday - Saturday, May 29-30 at the San Diego Convention Center, 111 W. Harbor Drive. [ map ]

When and where is packet pickup?
Packet pickup will be available at the Health & Fitness Expo, Friday - Saturday, May 29-30. There is no packet pickup on race day. No bib numbers will be mailed. You must have your photo I.D. to pick up your race packet and you may not pick up for anyone else.

If I win an award, can I pick it up on race day?
All age group awards will be mailed within 6-8 weeks after the race.

Will I receive a Finishers Certificate for completing the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon?
Yes, all finishers certificates will be mailed out in July.

Post-Race Headliner Concert:
The 2009 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon San Diego Post Race Concert will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2009. Tickets will not be for sale at the door.

Please Note: All participants will receive complimentary entry into the post race concert with your race number. Your bib is your concert ticket. Simply show your number at the gate for entry; you do not need to surrender your bib.

Will there be refreshments at the Finish Line?
Yes, all participants will be provided with bananas, bagels, water and other refreshments at no cost.
