The Running Elvi Break Records!

No you weren’t dreaming at Mile 13 when you saw Elvis run by you… nor were you hallucinating at Mile 15 when you were feeling strong and surged by The King…as a matter of fact, it would have been hard to miss all the “Elvis” impersonating marathoners this weekend, especially when there were 147 “Running Elvi” registered to participate in the 2008 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.

Representing just about every US state and 3 countries (Mexico, Canada, UK), the Running Elvi strutted their stuff through all 26.2 miles and looked good doing it! Why were all these costumed rockers running the streets of San Diego?

For some it was the sheer pleasure of dress up and others as a tribute to their rock idol but for each and every running Elvis, it was in the name of Guinness (no, not the beer, but we hope you enjoyed your Michelob Ultra at the finish), but a Guinness World Record for the most registered “Running Elvi” in a marathon event.

Prior to 2008, the most “Running Elvi” to participate at Rock ‘n’ Roll were 46, so congratulations go out to all the fun-loving, enthusiastic and down right sexy (if we do say so ourselves) Running Elvi participants.

Not only did they set a marathon record, but there were other awards bestowed upon them on Sunday. As if running a marathon isn’t challenging enough, imagine running in costume and running fast enough to be one of the 3 fastest “Running Elvi.” The 3 fastest finishers (in order of finish) were:

Male
First Place: Scott LaPrath 3:17:27
Second Place: William Molesworth 3:25:32
Third Place: George Saunders 3:28:44

Female
First Place: Tina Geller 4:01:33
Second Place: Adriana Anderson 4:23:37
Third Place: Dana Ryan 4:33:03

Not to be forgotten were the Elvi that won style points from the judges (hey if you can’t beat `em, you may as well look good trying!) In the best-dressed competition, the winner was 43-year old David "Blue Hawaii Elvis" Brunken from Moreno Valley, CA.

So what are your plans for 2009? Running a marathon? What better way to celebrate your love of Rock ‘n’ Roll then by donning an Elvis costume (blue suede shoes optional)…looks like you’ll have plenty of company!
